Recent data from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), the UK’s benchmark for small-scale renewable energy installations, reveals that the nation has now achieved 250,000 certified heat pump installations. This huge achievement supports the work Powered Now, the UK’s leading Job Management App for Renewable Installers, have completed to compliment its forms and certificates with renewables.
This marks a significant milestone in the UK’s shift towards small-scale renewable energy. In fact, the latest figures indicate a surge in adoption. Between January and July 2024, over 30,000 certified heat pumps were installed in homes and small businesses. This represents a 45% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Consequently, this rapid growth suggests that 2024 will set a new record for heat pump installations. More people are, therefore, embracing cleaner, greener heating solutions.
Moreover, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) plays a crucial role in making heat pumps accessible and affordable. According to government data, BUS applications increased by 73% from January to June 2024. This is in comparison to the same timeframe in 2023. During this period, 14,554 applications were submitted. This reflects a growing number of consumers in England and Wales taking advantage of the £7,500 incentive. Specifically, this applies to MCS-certified heat pump installations.
Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland (HES) Grant and Loan program offers similar support. It provides grants of up to £7,500 for heat pump installations. Additionally, households eligible for a rural uplift can receive up to £9,000.
Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS, commented on the growing adoption:
“It’s great to see the growing number of consumers across the UK switching to heat pumps to heat their homes.”
Furthermore, he added, “Clearly, there is still some way to go to achieve the target of 600,000 annual heat pump installations by 2028. However, with the BUS running until March 2028, consumer demand looks set to continue rising.”
“MCS certified installers give consumers confidence in the quality, safety, and performance of their heat pump installations. They ensure installations use certified products to the highest quality.”
“Indeed, MCS standards are vital for building consumer trust in renewable energy. They offer peace of mind to those transitioning to cleaner, greener heating solutions.”
Benjamin Dyer, CEO of Powered Now, commented on this milestone:
“It’s fantastic news that 250,000 homeowners in the UK have now adopted heat pumps. Undoubtedly, this is the future of home and commercial heating.”
“This development strongly supports the work we have done at Powered Now to back the renewables sector.”
“In our latest release, we included the Heat Pump Commissioning Certificate, Air Source Heat Pump Servicing Certificate, Vented Cylinder Commissioning Checklist, and GSHP Servicing.”
“Consequently, these are some of the fastest-growing certificates currently in use.”
