Trade insurance,
made easy
Insurance might not be the most exciting part of running a business, but having the right cover matters — it protects the business you’ve worked hard to build, helps you meet the requirements for certain jobs, and gives you confidence when the unexpected happens.
Here we outline what cover to consider, what to have ready before getting a quote, and how to get 10% off your premium.
Two minutes
Which cover do you actually need?
Tick everything that sounds like your business and we’ll show you the types of cover that could be relevant, including any legal requirements that may apply. It’s a quick way to understand your options before you get a quote — the choice of cover is always yours.
Worth asking about
Tick a box above to build it.
Most trades end up ticking the first three — working in customers' homes and using their own tools. Public liability and goods & tools cover are usually the ones people ask about first; Kingsbridge can confirm what's right for your specific setup.
Or call Kingsbridge on 01242 808 740 and talk it through. Mention Powered Now.

Before you pick up the phone
Have this to hand.
A quote takes minutes if you've got the details ready and half an afternoon if you haven't. Here's what you'll usually be asked, and what the Kingsbridge Trades package includes before you add anything to it.
Worth having to hand
Rough figures are fine — they'll firm it up with you.
- Your trade and what you actually doBe specific. "Plumber who also fits bathrooms" prices differently to "plumber".
- Annual turnoverLast year's figure, or your best estimate for this year.
- Staff and subcontractorsHow many, and whether subbies supply their own materials or just labour — it changes which policy covers them.
- What your tools are worth to replaceNew price, not what you paid. Most trades underestimate this badly.
- The kind of sites you work onDomestic, commercial, industrial, and whether you go above a certain height.
- Any claims in the last five yearsDeclare them. A missing claim is the fastest way to have a future one refused.

The questions people actually ask.
Security conditions, usually. Tools policies typically exclude theft from an unattended home where doors and windows weren't properly locked, and commonly require you to remove the keys and secure anything that gives access to your vehicle when you leave it.
Van locks, a tracker or CCTV help. So does reading the conditions section of your policy wording before you need it — the guides above walk through where to find it.
Often yes. Employers' liability is a legal requirement when you employ anyone, and labour-only subcontractors — those turning up with their hands rather than their own materials and insurance — are frequently treated as employees for this purpose.
Some business types are exempt. Check HSE's guidance on employers' liability, or ask the broker to look at your specific setup rather than guessing.
Public liability is for physical harm — you put a drill through a pipe, or a customer trips over your gear. Professional indemnity is for financial harm caused by your judgement — you spec the wrong boiler capacity and the client has to pay to put it right.
If you only ever fit what someone else has specified, you may not need PI. The moment you're advising, designing or measuring up, it's worth asking about.
Five minutes now saves a lot later. Check the policy holder details are right, that the cover and limits match what you asked for, when the policy starts and ends, whether it auto-renews, and what the excess is. Then note who to call to make a claim.
The "Understanding your policy documents" guide above has this as a checklist you can work through.
