Mental health in the trades: what’s really stressing tradespeople in 2026

Mental Health In The Trades

Mental health in the trades isn’t just about the physical graft. Our 2026 research shows that for most tradespeople, the biggest pressure is running the business. 93% of trade business owners and self-employed tradespeople say it causes them stress or anxiety, and much of that comes from evening admin and late payment.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10th October 2026, here’s what the data says, why it matters, and what you can do about it.

Key stats from the Powered Now NOW Report 2026

  • 93% of trade business owners say running their business causes stress or anxiety
  • 45% experience that stress regularly
  • Tradespeople spend an average of 5 hours 20 minutes a week on admin
  • 62% do their admin in the evenings after work, and 43% at weekends
  • The average tradesperson is owed £5,901 in unpaid invoices
  • 60% have written off money because chasing it felt like too much hassle
  • Only 48% had a proper week’s holiday in the last 12 months

Why Are Tradespeople So Stressed?

Ask most plumbers, electricians or heating engineers what’s stressing them out and it’s rarely the job itself. They know how to fix a boiler. What they didn’t sign up for is being a salesperson, accountant, debt collector and receptionist as well.

The NOW Report 2026, which Powered Now runs with Installer, asked 140 tradespeople about their working lives. The results were clear. 93% of business owners and self-employed tradespeople said running their business causes them some stress or anxiety, and 45% said they feel it regularly.

That’s not a small group having a bad month. It’s almost everyone who runs a trade business.

The Other Shift: Admin After Hours

One of the biggest drivers is admin. Tradespeople who handle their own paperwork spend an average of 5 hours 20 minutes a week on quoting, invoicing, scheduling and chasing payments. 29% spend more than seven hours.

The timing makes it worse. 62% do their admin in the evenings after work and 43% at weekends. We call it the other shift: you finish on site, get home, have your tea, and then the laptop comes out.

37% told us they regularly do admin late at night or at weekends that they wish they could avoid. That’s time taken from family, sleep and rest, which are the things that help people cope with stress in the first place.

Slow admin costs money as well as time. Most tradespeople send a quote two or three days after a visit, and 55% believe they’ve definitely or probably lost a job because a quote went out too slowly.

Late Payments And Mental Health

Money worries are the other big one. On average, the tradespeople we surveyed are owed £5,901 in unpaid invoices, and 26% are owed more than £10,000.

It’s rarely an honest mistake. 67% have had a customer deliberately delay payment, dispute an invoice unfairly or try to avoid paying altogether. Half have been ghosted by a customer after finishing a job.

Some of the excuses tradespeople shared were almost funny: “The cat died.” “Dropped laptop in the bath.” “Your money was in an envelope in the glove compartment of my car when it was stolen.” But when you’ve paid for the materials and the customer won’t pay, it’s not a joke.

The result is exhaustion. 60% of tradespeople have written off money they were owed because chasing it felt like too much hassle. Many are simply too worn out to keep chasing.

Burnout And The Missing Holiday

Only 48% of trade business owners had taken a proper holiday in the last 12 months, meaning a week where they fully switched off.

When you’re self-employed, time off means no income, and there’s always one more job to fit in. But rest isn’t a luxury. In a job involving gas, electricity, heights and heavy tools, tiredness is a safety risk as well as a mental health one.

The Good News

It’s not all bad. 84% of tradespeople would still recommend the trades as a career to a young person, and 51% of business owners feel confident about the next 12 months. People love the work. The aim is to make the business side less of a weight.

7 Ways To Reduce Stress As A Tradesperson

  1. Quote before you leave the drive. Sending the quote while you’re still outside the customer’s house means one less job tonight, and you’re more likely to win the work.
  2. Invoice on the day. Add any extras while you remember them. 41% of tradespeople have forgotten or not bothered to invoice for extras at some point.
  3. Agree payment terms in writing. Set out when you expect to be paid before you start, and take a deposit on bigger jobs.
  4. Pick one chasing night. Choose one evening a week for chasing payments, rather than letting it follow you every night.
  5. Give Sunday admin a time limit. Set a 20-minute timer, check who owes you and what’s on tomorrow, then shut the laptop.
  6. Book time off first. Put next year’s holiday in the diary before the work fills it.
  7. Talk to someone. A mate, your partner, a fellow tradesperson. If a mate in the trade has gone quiet, send them a text. “Alright mate, you good?” is enough to start.

Where Can Tradespeople Get Mental Health Support?
